Viking Gate Motor Replacement: The North Hollywood Owner’s Guide

If your Viking gate opener has stopped responding, makes a hard grinding noise, or trips its breaker every time it runs, the motor itself is likely done. We stock and install Viking-compatible replacement motors for most residential and light-commercial Viking models, with typical installed pricing in North Hollywood running between $650 and $1,150 depending on the model and what’s around it. Most swaps are completed in two to three hours on-site, and we carry the common Viking motor assemblies on our trucks so we’re not sending you away for a second appointment.

Here’s the usual picture we see across the San Fernando Valley: the gate worked fine for twelve or fourteen years, then one morning it hums but won’t move, or it moves in short jerks, or it only opens when you give the gate a push. That’s the motor’s windings breaking down, the capacitor failing, or the gear train stripping. By the time you notice it, the part has usually been failing quietly for months.

Which Viking Models This Applies To

Viking has been building gate operators since the 1970s, and their residential lineup breaks into a few families: the G-5, the F-1, the K-2, and the more recent T-21 and R-6 series. The motor replacement path is different for each. A K-2 swing arm motor does not swap into a G-5 slide unit, even though both say Viking on the cover and both might be running the same control board. We see that mismatch attempted more often than we’d like, usually by someone who bought a “universal” motor online and then called us in North Hollywood after the splice job failed.

The reliable way to identify what you need is the data plate on the operator itself, not the arm or the chassis. The plate gives you the model, the voltage (most North Hollywood residential Viking units run 115V or 220V single-phase), and the serial number, which tells us the production run and whether your unit uses the older brushed motor or the newer brushless design. We stock genuine Viking OEM motors for the G-5, K-2, and F-1 series, and for older units where Viking no longer manufactures the exact motor, we install a quality aftermarket equivalent that matches the original torque, RPM, and mounting pattern. We’ll tell you plainly which direction makes sense for your gate. Our shop does not recommend cheap no-name replacements on Viking operators: the gearing inside these units is built to tight tolerances, and a motor that’s slightly off spec will eat the gearbox within a year.

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: the Viking F-1 and a handful of early G-5 units share the same motor housing but use different shaft lengths. If you order by look instead of by serial number, you’ll end up with a motor that bolts in and then can’t reach the drive coupling. That’s a $300 mistake we’ve watched several North Hollywood homeowners make before they called us.

Ironworks Gate Co. is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Viking Access Systems, but we’ve been working on their equipment here in the Valley for decades and keep current on their parts catalogs and service bulletins.

Signs Your Viking Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • The gate hums but will not move. This is the classic dead-motor symptom. The capacitor charges and the windings try to engage, but the motor can’t produce enough torque to turn the drive shaft. If you hear the hum and nothing happens, stop pressing the remote and call us: repeated attempts will burn the motor out completely and can damage the control board too.
  • The gate moves in short, jerky bursts. When a Viking motor’s brushes are worn (on brushed models) or the control board is getting weak signal feedback, the gate will start and stop in a stutter. It’s not a remote battery problem. It’s the motor’s internal resistance climbing as the windings degrade.
  • The circuit breaker for the gate trips every few days. A motor with failing windings draws more current than the circuit was sized for. In North Hollywood, where summer heat pushes already-strained motors harder, we see this pattern most often between June and September. A motor that trips a 20-amp breaker repeatedly is telling you it’s running hot and near the end.
  • You have to push the gate to get it started. Once a Viking motor loses enough torque, the gate will sit and grind until someone gives it a shove. That is not a maintenance issue. The motor is done and the gearbox is likely next if you keep doing it.
  • The operator smells hot, or you can hear grinding from inside the housing. Burnt varnish smell means the windings have overheated. Grinding is the gear train stripping because the motor is no longer turning smoothly. Both are final-stage warnings. Call us at (925) 693-7978 before the gate locks itself half-open.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Viking gate motor replacement in North Hollywood, you’re looking at an installed range of roughly $650 to $1,150. The spread comes down to three things: which motor your model takes, whether the gearbox is still in serviceable shape, and whether your operator is 115V or 220V. A G-5 slide motor with a good gearbox lands near the bottom of that range. A K-2 swing arm motor, or any job where the gear train is also stripped, lands near the top.

What you’ll get from us, every time: the motor, the coupling or drive gear if it’s worn, fresh grease where the manufacturer calls for it, a full cycle test, and the operator re-tuned so the open and close limits are set correctly. The price is quoted and agreed before we start turning bolts. You will not get a surprise invoice at the end. Every Viking motor replacement we install is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise: if it isn’t right, we come back and make it right, no arguing, no paperwork. We also offer $50 off any repair over $250, so mention it when you call.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a lot you can check on your own before you call: the breaker, the remote batteries, the photo eye alignment, obvious debris in the track. Those are all safe to look at. But a Viking motor replacement is not a homeowner job, and we’ll be straight about why. These units tie together 115V or 220V line voltage, a capacitor that holds a charge even after the breaker is off, and a gearbox under spring-loaded tension. One wrong connection or one capacitor discharge and you’re getting a shock or losing a fingertip. We’ve had North Hollywood customers say the YouTube video made it look easy. It isn’t.

If the gate hums, jerks, or trips its breaker, call us at (925) 693-7978. We’ll ask a few questions, tell you what we think, and give you a straight quote before we even schedule the truck. If you’d rather troubleshoot first, we’ll walk you through the safe checks and tell you honestly whether you need a motor or something smaller.
