Viking Welding & Fabrication: The North Hollywood Owner’s Guide

Viking gate welding and fabrication repair in North Hollywood typically runs $275-$650 installed, depending on what failed and how much metal needs to be cut out and replaced. We keep Viking-compatible hinge plates, post brackets, and reinforcement stock on our trucks, so most weld repairs are completed the same day you call. The way owners usually find us: a gate that’s sagging a few inches, dragging on the driveway, or making a sound like a screen door in a windstorm when the wind kicks up. Those are all metal fatigue problems, not motor problems, and they’re exactly what we fix.

Which Viking Models This Applies To

Most of the Viking welding and fabrication work we do in North Hollywood falls on the V-Series and R-Series residential swing gates, along with their matching post kits. The compatibility gotcha we see most often: Viking’s older 300-series gates used a thinner wall on the hinge post than the current R-Series, which means a bolt-on repair plate that fits a 2015 model won’t sit flush on a 1998 model without some grinding. If you can read the model tag on the inside of the post or the motor arm, that settles it. If the tag’s gone, we measure the post wall and the hinge centerline, and match the stock accordingly.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question for Viking specifically: Viking’s factory hinge plates are fine steel, but they’re not special. A well-made aftermarket plate from a local fabricator, cut and welded to match your post, is often a better long-term fix than the factory part because we can go thicker and wider where the metal actually cracked. Viking is one of nine gate brands we service and stock parts for, including LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls, but the welding side doesn’t care what name is on the motor. What matters is the steel underneath it. We’re an independent company, not affiliated with Viking, which means we’re free to tell you what actually works rather than what the factory catalog says to sell you.

Signs Your Viking Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate drags on the driveway at the latch end. This almost always means the hinge post has leaned or the hinge plates have fatigued. The motor keeps pushing, but the frame is no longer square, and the gate wears itself down slowly.
  • A rust stain runs down the post from under the hinge plate. That’s water getting trapped between the plate and the post, and it’s been working on that metal for a while. By the time you see the stain, the plate usually needs to come off and be replaced or re-welded.
  • The gate bounces or shudders when it stops. Loose or cracked welds at the hinge points let the gate flex, and the motor’s stop cycle turns that flex into a rattle. If it’s bad enough, the gate will keep oscillating for a second or two after it stops.
  • A crack runs through the weld bead at the hinge. This one’s visible if you look closely. It’s also the one that fails suddenly, usually when someone’s walking through or the wind catches the gate the wrong way. Don’t wait on this one.
  • The gate leans in or out at the top, away from the post. Post failure, or a hinge that’s pulled loose from the post. Either way, the longer it leans, the more it costs to fix, because the welds keep tearing progressively.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In North Hollywood, here’s what Viking welding and fabrication work typically runs:

  • Single hinge plate replacement, welded in place: $275-$400
  • Hinge plate plus post reinforcement (sleeve or plate): $400-$550
  • Cracked weld repair, cleaned and re-welded: $250-$375
  • Full hinge assembly rebuild, both plates and new hardware: $500-$650

Those prices include the labor, the steel, grinding and prep, and primer on the repaired area. What drives the range is how much of the old metal is salvageable and how much access we have to the post. If the post is set in concrete flush against a wall, that’s a different job than a freestanding post with clearance all around. We quote the price before any work begins, and it doesn’t change unless you ask for something extra. Every weld job is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

Some of this you can check yourself safely: look for the rust stain, look for the visible crack, watch whether the gate leans when it’s open. None of that requires tools or getting your hands near anything dangerous. But welding a hinge plate or re-setting a post is not a weekend project. A gate swinging on a broken weld can drop without warning, and a hinge under tension can go when you’re prying on it. That’s how forearms get broken and driveway injuries happen. We say it plainly: once metal needs to be cut, heated, or welded, call someone who does it every day. We show up with the steel, the welder, and the experience. That’s (925) 693-7978. A live person answers, day or night.
