How DoorKing Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

• Keypad ghost-pressing on 1812 and 1838 models. The membrane keypads on DoorKing’s 1812 telephone entry and 1838 access control systems are notoriously sensitive to the North Hollywood sun. After three or four summers, the overlay starts to delaminate and moisture creeps in behind the buttons, so the system registers a “1” or a “9” nobody touched. We see this constantly in the flat tracts between Vineland and Lankershim, where gates face west and bake all afternoon. The fix is replacing the keypad membrane and sealing it correctly, not just re-programming codes and hoping.
• Telephone entry systems dropping calls on the 1830 series. DoorKing 1830-series phone entry boards rely on good phone-line voltage to ring the house line. If the voltage drops because of aging wiring or a weak phone service, the board powers up but won’t complete the ring. We see this a lot on older NoHo properties where the original 1960s phone lines are still feeding the gate. The board isn’t dead in most cases. The line is. • Relay chatter and intermittent open commands on 9150 and 9155 boards. The relays on DoorKing’s 9150-series control boards are prone to arcing when they’ve been switching a heavier gate motor than the rating allows. Wiring a high-current swing opener through a light-duty relay works for a year or two, then the contacts carbon up and the gate only opens on every third press. We replace the relay and, where needed, add a contactor so the board only handles low-voltage switching. That’s the proper fix.
• Cold-weather display blanking on the 1601 and 1803 keypads. DoorKing’s LED displays don’t love cold mornings. When the temperature drops below about 40 degrees, the older 1601-series keypads will sometimes go blank until the sun hits them. This is a known quirk of those boards, not a dead system. A board-level capacitor change settles it, but we’ll diagnose it honestly first. If it’s just a cold-morning annoyance, we’ll tell you that too.
• Remote receiver drift on 8050-series receivers. The 8050 receiver, paired with DoorKing entry systems, has a habit of slowly losing its learned transmitter codes. One by one, remotes stop working until the system’s down to the built-in keypad only. We’ve seen this on systems where the receiver is mounted inside a metal enclosure, which degrades the signal over time. The fix is repositioning the antenna and re-learning all remotes, then testing thoroughly before we leave.
