BFT Welding & Fabrication: The North Hollywood Owner’s Guide
We stock and install BFT-compatible welding and fabrication parts for driveway gates throughout North Hollywood, with most hinge, bracket, and mount repairs running $280-$650 installed. We carry common BFT weldments on our trucks, so most jobs are done in a single visit. The way owners usually find us: the gate starts dragging, a weld cracks at the hinge point, or the whole leaf sags an inch lower than it did last month. That sag is the metal telling you something broke, and ignoring it just makes the next repair more expensive.
Ironworks Gate Co. is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with BFT, but we service their equipment every week and know where their metalwork fails after years of Valley sun and daily cycles.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
The welding and fabrication points on BFT gates are largely the same across their residential and light-commercial lines: the Deimos, Phobos, and Giuno swing operators, plus the BFT sliding gate systems common on apartment and estate driveways in North Hollywood. The parts that fail are rarely the BFT motor itself. They’re the steel that carries the load: hinge plates, gate brackets, mounting posts, rack guides, and the fabricated arms that connect the operator to the leaf.
The gotcha with BFT specifically: their swing-arm brackets use a tapered pin design that doesn’t swap cleanly with generic hardware-store replacements. If a handyman welds on a universal bracket, the geometry changes and the operator strains against its own arm. We match the original angles and pin sizing, or we fabricate a replacement that preserves the exact stroke geometry BFT engineered for. Check the label on your operator housing for the model prefix, then measure the bracket hole centers. That tells us whether an OEM BFT weldment or a fabricated equivalent is the right call, and we’ll tell you straight before any work begins.
Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate leaf sags or scrapes the driveway. A worn hinge pin or stretched hinge plate changes the swing arc. The motor keeps working, but it’s fighting the extra friction. That’s how a $300 hinge job becomes a $1,200 operator replacement.
- A crack runs along a weld or through a bracket. Cracks almost always start at the heat-affected zone next to the weld bead, not in the middle of the steel. California’s dry-wet cycling through the year plus daily gate movement makes this the most common failure we see in North Hollywood.
- The BFT operator trips or throws an error code after working fine for years. Something downstream is binding. The control board senses the amp draw spike and shuts down. Before we touch the motor, we check every welded joint and hinge in the chain.
- The gate bounces or shudders at the end of travel. Loose mounting bolts on the operator bracket or a fatigued mount plate let the motor twist under load. The motor works, the steel doesn’t hold it still.
- You can hear the gate before you see it. A rhythmic squeak, a groaning hinge, or a dull clunk halfway through the cycle means metal-to-metal contact where there wasn’t any. Weeds and irrigation overspray in North Hollywood accelerate corrosion on the low spots.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In North Hollywood, most BFT welding and fabrication repairs land between $280 and $650 installed. A simple hinge plate replacement with field welding runs on the lower end. A full rack guide rebuild or fabricating a custom swing arm from plate steel puts you at the higher end. If the gate post itself has rotted or cracked, expect to add post replacement work beyond that range, and we’ll show you the number before a single bolt is turned.
| Work Scope | Typical Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Hinge plate or bracket repair, welded on site | $280-$420 |
| BFT swing-arm bracket replacement (geometry-matched) | $320-$480 |
| Custom fabrication: replacement arm or mounting plate | $420-$650 |
| Full hinge rebuild, both leaves (parts + labor) | $520-$780 |
Every price is quoted and agreed before work starts. No surprises on the bill. The labor includes grinding out the old weld to clean steel, positioning the new part to factory geometry, welding, and a full cycle test of the BFT operator after. The metalwork and the labor both fall under our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable with a wrench, there are a few things you can safely check. Look for visible cracks in the bracket plates. Test the hinge bolts for tightness with a hand tool. Lubricate the hinge pins with a dry lubricant, not grease, which attracts Valley dust. That’s about where the DIY line ends.
The welding itself is where we tell people to stop. Structural welds on a moving gate leaf hold hundreds of pounds under daily cycles. A bad weld doesn’t just fail. It fails suddenly, and a falling gate leaf weighs more than most people expect. Victor Salinas studied welding and fabrication at LA Trade-Tech and has spent four decades fixing exactly these failures, and even he won’t shortcut a structural weld. If the steel is cracked, call us at (925) 693-7978. We’ll look at it, tell you whether it’s a weld repair or a replacement, and charge you the same either way.
FAQs
In our experience, properly installed BFT weldments and hinge assemblies last 10 to 15 years in the North Hollywood climate before fatigue cracks or corrosion set in. Gates on sprinkler-heavy lots or lawns where irrigation hits the gate post show failure earlier, around 8 years. The motor usually outlives the steel around it.
Yes, if the steel around the weld is still sound. We grind the crack out to clean metal and reweld. But if the bracket has cracked in two places, or the plate has thinned from rust, patching it just buys you a shortened timeline. We’ll tell you which one you have and let you decide.
Most single-bracket or hinge repairs are done in one visit of two to three hours. That includes removal, prep, welding, cooling, painting, and a full test cycle on your BFT operator. If a custom part needs to be cut and formed, we may schedule a follow-up the next day with the fabricated piece ready to install.
We stock common BFT hinge plates, swing-arm brackets, and mounting hardware on our trucks, which covers most North Hollywood calls on the first visit. For oddball sizes or custom arms, we fabricate in-house from steel stock. We also service and stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates, so if you have more than one gate brand on the property, we can handle both in the same visit. Call (925) 693-7978 and ask what’s on the truck that day.
