Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

DoorKing swing and slide operators share a design language, and most of the welding and fabrication work we do falls into a handful of part families. The 6000 and 6100 series swing operators use a cast aluminum crank arm and a steel mounting plate that take the full force of every open and close cycle. The 9000 series slide operators rely on a steel drive rail, idler brackets, and gate roller trucks that wear differently depending on the gate weight. The 1600 and 1800 series barrier gates use a different geometry again: the boom pivot and counterweight brackets are the usual failure points there.

Identifying your part is easier than most owners expect. The mounting plate has a DoorKing part number stamped on the back edge; the crank arm has it cast into the inside face. If the label is gone or painted over, measure the bolt spacing on the plate. DoorKing has used the same 4-hole pattern on most swing arms since the early 2000s, but there are two different plate thicknesses depending on gate weight: 1/4-inch for gates under 600 pounds, 3/8-inch above that. We keep both in stock because putting a light-duty plate on a heavy gate is how welds crack in the first place.

Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate hesitates or jerks at the start of travel. A cracked weld on the mounting plate lets the operator push against flex instead of the gate. The motor overworks, the gate stutters, and the crack grows every cycle.
• You can see a visible gap or rust stain at a weld joint. Rust bleeding from a weld line means water got into a hairline crack. In North Hollywood’s dry summers that crack might sit for a season, but the winter rains move it along fast.
• The gate sags or scrapes the ground on the latch side. Broken hinge welds or a fractured gate frame corner change the gate’s geometry. The opener keeps pushing a heavier, misbalanced gate, which wears everything downstream.
• The operator runs but the gate barely moves. This is often a stripped or cracked crank arm keyway. The motor turns, the arm slips, and the gate stays put. Continuing to run it chews the keyway into a smooth bore.
• You hear a pop or clunk when the gate starts or stops. That sound is slack being taken up by a part that has developed play. It could be a wallowed bolt hole in a bracket, a cracked weld flexing, or a hinge pin that ovaled its housing.

Here is the honest split. If you want to identify the part, take photos of the label and measure the bolt spacing: that saves us a return trip and gets your quote faster. Checking a gate for visible weld cracks, rust at the joints, and sag is safe and useful. What we would not recommend doing yourself is removing or welding a structural gate part. A swing gate under torque stores enough energy that a cracked bracket letting go can throw the gate or the operator arm hard. Welding a hinge without supporting the gate properly is how people get pinned.
