Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The North Hollywood Owner’s Guide

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear built its reputation on the AK series keypads and the AE and AM series intercoms, and a surprising number of them are still in service across North Hollywood today. The most common units we see are the AK-11, AK-21, and AK-31 keypads, along with the AE-100, AE-500, and AM-3 intercom boxes. If your unit predates 2010 or so, there’s a very good chance it’s one of these.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that catches a lot of owners off guard: Linear keypads from the AK series do not talk to every Linear receiver without a matchup. The AK-11 broadcasts on a fixed 310 MHz frequency, while some of the later models use 318 MHz. If you buy a “Linear compatible” keypad online without checking the receiver frequency, you’ll program it forty times and it still won’t open the gate. We carry both frequencies on the truck and verify the match before we replace anything.

For intercoms, the big variable is wire count. Older Linear intercoms run on four-conductor wiring for power and audio, while newer models with video add two more. If your existing wire is four-conductor and you want a video unit, we’ll need to run new wire, and that changes the scope of the job. Most North Hollywood homes built before 1990 have the four-conductor setup.

As for OEM versus aftermarket: Linear OEM keypads are well made and worth the price on the AK series, but the aftermarket housings for the AE intercoms are often just as good for less money. We’ll show you both prices and let you decide, and we won’t push a part you don’t need.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

• Buttons that take multiple presses to register. This is almost always a worn membrane or a corroded contact pad. The California sun dries out the rubber membrane over three or four summers, and then the micro-switches underneath start missing presses. The fix is a new keypad face or membrane kit, not a new opener.
• Gate only opens if you’re standing in one specific spot. If you have to hold the keypad at arm’s length or lean toward the gate to get it to respond, the antenna or transmitter range has degraded. Sometimes it’s a weak battery, but on hardwired keypads it’s usually a failing RF module.
• Intercom audio that cuts in and out or hums constantly. A constant hum is typically a failing capacitor in the power supply or a ground loop starting in the wiring. Intermittent audio is often a corroded terminal strip or a loose connection where the wire enters the box.
• Code memory resets every few days. If you program your code on Monday and it’s gone by Thursday, the memory chip or its backup battery has failed. On AK series keypads, the memory battery is soldered to the board on older revisions, which means board replacement rather than a battery swap.
• Keypad works but the gate motor doesn’t respond at all. This is the classic “it’s not the keypad” scenario. Before you order a new keypad, we test the receiver and the motor’s control board separately. About a third of the “bad keypads” we’re called out for in North Hollywood turn out to be a receiver that simply lost its programming after a power blink.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few safe things you can check before calling. Confirm the keypad has power. On battery units, swap in a fresh battery and try again. Check that no wire has pulled loose inside the box, which happens more than you’d expect on gates that get bumped. Clean the keypad face with a dry cloth; built-up Valley dust can interfere with the membrane.

What we’d recommend against is opening the intercom amplifier box and probing wiring with a multimeter if you’re not comfortable with low-voltage circuits. It’s not high-tension work like a gate spring, but there’s enough going on in there, from AC power input to exposed terminals, that a wrong probe placement can fry the board you’re trying to save.
