Which Linear Models This Applies To

The welded steel components on a Linear gate system vary by operator type, and the part that fails tells you a lot about the frame it’s attached to. For Linear swing-arm openers (the LRA and APeX series, including the popular ACT34 and related models), the components that most often need welding or fabrication are the post brackets, the arm attachment plates, and the pivot hardware at the gate leaf. For slide operators (SL and XL series), the stress concentrates at the drive rail brackets and the steel posts that carry the idler wheels. In North Hollywood, we see both types regularly, along with plenty of older Linear units that have been in service since before the paint faded.

Identifying your part before we show up saves a trip. Look for a stamped or tagged model number on the operator housing. On the bracket itself, measure bolt spacing center to center. Linear brackets from the apEx line often use a 4-bolt pattern at roughly 3-1/2 inches on center, while older LSO-era slide hardware used wider spacing. If your bracket is cracked but still in place, do not remove it. We can measure it on site and match it to OEM or fabricate an equivalent. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Linear specifically: most Linear mounting hardware is mild steel with a powder coat, and a well-made local fabrication in 3/16-inch plate is frequently stronger than the original part. That said, for bolts, pins, and anything with a machined bearing surface, OEM or a precision aftermarket match is the only sensible route. We will tell you which is which, straight up.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• Gate sags toward the latch side, and the gap at the hinge post widens at the top. The weld holding the hinge barrel to the post has cracked or stretched. The gate still works today, but every cycle works the crack deeper.
• The opener arm makes a hard clunk at the end of travel. The attachment bracket has loosened or the weld has flexed far enough to change the arm geometry. The motor keeps pushing because it cannot sense the slop.
• Rust staining runs down from a welded joint. Water has gotten under the powder coat and into the weld root. In North Hollywood’s wet winters and dry summers, that rust expands and contracts with the temperature, spitting the weld apart slowly from the inside.
• The gate scrapes or drags across the driveway at one specific point. A cracked post weld lets the whole leaf drop or twist just enough to touch. You might see a fresh scrape mark in the concrete.
• You find loose bolts every few weeks, no matter how often you tighten them. When the underlying steel has cracked, the bolts cannot hold torque. Tightening only pulls the crack further open over time.

A homeowner with a welder and some time can certainly repair a cracked gate bracket. We say that as welders. But the welding itself is the easy part. The reasons this goes wrong as a DIY job are the same reasons we get called out after DIY jobs: the weld is made without removing the load from the joint, so it cracks again in six months; the gate was not shimmed square before welding, so the new geometry fights the motor; or the heat from the weld cooked a wire or a sensor that runs too close to the bracket. If the part is bolted on and visibly cracked, you can safely unbolt it and bring it to us for a bench repair. If it is welded to the post and the gate hangs on it, leave it alone and call.
