Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication: The North Hollywood Owner’s Guide

When a Mighty Mule gate opener bracket cracks, a weld fails, or a mounting plate shears off, most North Hollywood homeowners find out the hard way: the gate still works, but it’s sagging, scraping, or binding against the motor. We stock Mighty Mule-compatible weldment and fabrication parts on our trucks, and most repairs run $220 to $480 installed, with same-day completion on the majority of jobs. The typical story we hear is that the gate got harder to open over a few weeks, then one morning it wouldn’t open at all, and the bracket was lying on the driveway.

Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

Mighty Mule has sold the MM series (MM260, MM360, MM371, MM372), the FM series (FM200, FM350, FM500, FM502), and the newer R-series (RB741, RB742, RB743, RB744) over the years. The fabrication parts that fail are largely the same across all of them: the front and rear mounting brackets, the gate anchor plates, the clevis pins and clevis assemblies, and the post pivot brackets. The gotcha is that Mighty Mule changed the bracket hole pattern between the FM and R-series generations, so a bracket that fits an FM500 will not line up on an RB741 without drilling. When you call us in North Hollywood, we ask for the model number off the arm or control box label before we show up, so we bring the right part on the first trip.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Mighty Mule specifically: the OEM brackets are powder-coated stamped steel, which is fine until it isn’t. We often fabricate replacement brackets from heavier-gauge steel when the OEM part has failed once already, because a second factory bracket will usually fail the same way. For gate anchor plates and pivot points where the gate itself carries the load, a hand-fabricated part is frequently the better fix.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate sags toward the latch side. This is usually a failed post pivot bracket or a wallowed-out hinge point. The opener keeps pulling, but the gate is hanging lower than it should, and the motor strains harder every cycle.
  • You hear a clunk or metallic pop when the gate changes direction. A cracked mounting bracket flexes under load, then snaps back when the motor reverses. The sound is the bracket moving on its bolts.
  • The opener arm is tilted or leaning. If the front mount has torn loose or the anchor plate has shifted, the arm no longer sits level. The gate will still move, but the geometry is off and the motor is working against itself.
  • A visible crack at the weld or along the bracket bend. Mighty Mule brackets crack at the sharp bend where the metal was formed. If you can see daylight through a crack, the part is done.
  • The gate stops mid-travel or reverses on its own. The safety system reads the binding as an obstruction. The motor is fine; the fabrication underneath it is failing.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In North Hollywood, a Mighty Mule bracket or weldment replacement typically runs $220 to $480 installed, depending on what failed and whether we’re replacing with OEM, an aftermarket equivalent, or fabricating a heavier part on site. The price includes the part, the labor, the hardware, and re-setting the opener limits so the motor isn’t fighting the gate. If a weld repair is involved rather than a bracket swap, figure $180 to $340 depending on access and prep work. The quote is given and agreed before any work starts, so the number we say is the number on the invoice.

Every job is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the part isn’t right, we come back and make it right, no paperwork and no arguing. That’s the Keystone Standard we’ve applied to every gate job since 1984.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the model number, take a photo of the failed part, and watch the gate cycle once or twice to see where it binds. What we don’t recommend is grinding, welding, or unbolting a bracket while the opener is under tension. A Mighty Mule arm under load can release suddenly if the wrong bolt comes out, and the arm itself weighs enough to hurt someone. Welding on a gate in place also risks frying the control board if the ground clamp is poorly placed. For that reason, we tell North Hollywood homeowners plainly: checking is free, but the repair belongs to someone who does this weekly. Call us at (925) 693-7978 and we’ll talk through what you’re seeing before anyone rolls a truck.
